Antique Talon Brooch

This unique + lovely item is an antique talon brooch.

Talon brooches such as this began to appear in Britain made popular by Queen Victoria after she brought her castle, Balmoral, in 1848. Queen Victoria loved Scotland and had much pride for her Scottish ancestry and this was reflected in Scottish design elements found in jewelry of the Victorian Age. Woman adorned themselves not just with figurative representations of birds, insects and animals also real taxidermist specimens. Along with talon brooches, bodices where adorned with feathers and stuffed birds perched on hats among foliage.

During the Victorian Age, brooches with the foot of a game bird where set in silver or gold and often adorned with gems became fashionable. A pin such as this would have been worn by men as a kilt pin or by ladies as a brooch. A brooch such as this is likely a grouse foot. The grouse foot is a symbol of luck in Scotland.

Miscellanea,or a statement of intent

Welcome to Kitty Blackwell's House-

A place full of cabinets of curiosities + curated collections. A place where things that don't go together go together. There is so much enjoyment to be had living with treasures + collections.

Dust + decay my way. Color to tells a story. Bright whites + stark blacks. Reds + browns of rust + oriental carpets. Stained glass illuminations. Textured taupes + crumbling cremes. Texture talks. Form + function have not been forgotten but the beauty of the object when places in the right light shines.

Here I worship at the altar of the accumulation of beauty. I believe in the power of objects to transcend + help make us something more than we would have been otherwise. Let what is inside out into the home. This blog is a collection of inspiration + documentation to help make the home, heart + every surface in between beautiful. It is also a place to  recognizing beauty in imperfection + learn to appreciate the unusual + unique, Expect to be transformed.

Miscellaneous manifestations of the aesthetic, spiritual + scientific objects for your procurement coming soon.
